Program Description Sheridan’s Social Service Worker – Gerontology program will prepare you to become a leader in the care of older adults. Outstanding career preparation Train to help meet the needs of the rapidly growing population of older adults in Ontario, across Canada and around the world. Things you'll learn to do How to advocate for older adults. How to develop and implement suitable recreation programs for seniors. How to work with persons living with cognitive impairments and their families. How to support older adults living with mental health challenges. How to deliver a holistic service plan to improve the lives of older adults. Hands-on experience You'll have the opportunity to work with older adults two days a week in a field practicum setting in Terms 2, 3 and 4. Your practicum gives you valuable on-the-job experience and the opportunity to put theories learned in class to practical use. You'll have the choice of working in a wide variety of settings which support older adults in our communities. Additional information - Outstanding Professors Your professors are not only outstanding educators, but also well experienced in a variety of community service positions. The faculty includes social workers, community developers and gerontology specialists. Each brings a unique and valuable perspective to the study of gerontological social work. You'll learn through: Interactive lectures and in-class group collaborative activities. Guest speakers from the helping professions and community. Online learning opportunities. Gain Professional Registration When you graduate from the Social Service Worker – Gerontology program, you'll be eligible for membership with the Ontario College of Social Worker and Social Service Work. University Linkages This college diploma program maintains linkages with a number of universities, which offer further educational opportunities for our graduates. Sheridan Centre for Elder Research The Social Service Worker – Gerontology program has a unique partnership with the Sheridan Centre for Elder Research. Research at the Centre is regularly integrated into our curriculum, and students may have the opportunity to engage in applied research projects.
